Ten years ago, to be a part of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual & Transexual (LGBT) in Vietnam was very difficult. It is truly difficult for Vietnamese LGBT to come out to their family and friends. But now, with presenting of some homosexual organization in this country, being “People Like Us” became more thriving and the negative attitude towards LGBT community slowly changed. Homosexuality in Vietnam To talk about being gay used to be very taboo in Vietnamese culture many years ago. The fact is, LGBT has not been taught in school and it is also not been portrayed or published in media like now. This is such a bias towards the LGBT community and makes them feel afraid to come out. On 2002, some media claimed that being homosexual was a “social evil”. There is also no detailed sex education in school for youth. The teacher normally will skip the chapter of Human Reproduction by asking the student to read on their own at home. Next, there is no further discussion about the topic. Besides that, the syllabus in the textbook is only covered about heterosexual practice only instead of other sexual orientation. But now, being part of LGBT in Vietnam is very flourishing. Some say that Vietnam is one of the ungay places in the world. There is less discrimination and less violence towards the LGBT community here. There are many friendly gays and lesbians in bars, coffee shops and pubs especially in centre of Ho Chi Minh City ...

Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam with a crowded population of 10,000,000+ residences. The city is somewhat polluted, slightly run-down and very quaint. If you are in Hanoi, there are numbers of activities to do in order to fulfill your blue weekend. Old Quarters of Hanoi All over Old Quarter of Hanoi you can see many French Colonial villas crumbling at every corner and in between. You will see many new and modern buildings springing up here and there. If you like to zoom to French colonial architecture, this is one of the best places. Besides that, there are many local places that you can explore. Visit or explore in tiny alleyways and take a look into outdoor markets. Alleyways are always busy with people from all sides of angles. The Old Quarter is one of the busiest places in Hanoi with bikes, buses and cabs. Not including outdoor markets and floods of tourists along the street side. Sometimes you can see busses stuck in the middle of the street which will make the traffic become more congested. Old Quarter also a good place for you to enjoy Vietnamese Beer (Beer Hoi) as low as VND7000 for one glass. You will sit on a small plastic stools, chit chatting with local and watching people pass by like others do. Hoan Kiem Lake History says that Hoan Kiem Lake is the home of a great giant turtle. According to the legend, King Le Loi had been given a magical sword from ...

This is a very interesting question. Will you come back to Vietnam? Everybody has their own story and experiences while visiting the “Hidden Charms of Vietnam”. Many travelers might have good memories of the wonderful hospitality of Vietnamese tourism services, mouthwatering and authentic Vietnamese cuisine and enjoying the most spectacular views of sea front, highlands and historical sites in the country. But, some others may have a bad experience when visiting this country. In some cities, there are some street sellers that have always overcharged and refused to return back proper change during business transaction. One of my personal experiences, during my first trip to Vung Tau beach city, the seafood restaurant used to charge triple to the lobster that we ordered, even during that time, I was there with a native Vietnamese travel buddy from Saigon. In other case, a friend of mine took a cruise trip to Halong Bay and unluckily the tour operator had overbooked and suddenly he had an unexpected roommate during the cruise. He couldn’t get any refund, just continued with the trip. According to a travel writer in his website, Matt said that during his trip to Mekong Delta, he took a bus back to Ho Chi Minh City and intended to buy lemon juice at a rest and relax station. The lady drink vendor kept laughing and looking at him continually. A Vietnamese overseas who joined the trip informed him that the seller tried to rip off to him because he was white. ...

Travellers to Dalat now can enjoy the unique architecture of Dalat Railway Station and take a ride on the steam locomotive to visit Linh Phuoc Pagoda. The pagoda is located 2 kilometres northeast of the Dalat City. This station is one of the most memorable stations and famous architectural landmarks of Dalat. It was built in 1932 and completed in 1936 by a French Designer, Reveron and Moncet. This station is located at 1500 meters above sea level and the highest in Vietnam. Besides Hao Phong Railway Station, Dalat Railway Station is one one the ancient stations in Vietnam. The Historical Architectural The development of this station was started after suggestions from the French Authorities to have a station and also to have another summer attraction in the highlands. Besides accepting the opinion of the French government, the designers also injected some tourist attraction touchs to this special project. The three roofs of the station are to symbolize the LangBiang Mountain and the clock at the centre portrays Dr.Alexandre Yersin who was residing on the Lam Vien Plateau. There are more Yersin’s memories and tribute when you go inside to the station. The rear of the station is to symbolize about the adventurous Yersin and the large spacious angular ceiling with straight lines inside the station show the honestly and majestic yet very humble life of Yersin. Besides the high ceiling, there are many colourful windows in the station which serves to light up the station during day time. The ...

Addressing people is a difficult thing in every language. English speaking people are usually easy and non-formal, but other Western nationalities focus highly on their titles and correct names. Vietnamese are also very easy, but there are some points you should keep in mind! First, not last name Let us consider how a Vietnamese name is built The recent Prime Minister of Vietnam is Mr. Nguyen Tan Dung. Usually, Nguyen is said to be the surname, whereas the first name is Dung. The Middle name Tan often shows you if the person is male or female. Nguyen is more than a surname, it is a clan name, a special Vietnamese relic phenomenon from the depths of history. This results in a high number of people with the name „Nguyen“. Please note also, that the surname comes first and the first name is the third name (Some people have a name consisting of four names, but this is the same like in the West, where some have only two and other have three First and Middle names). The difference between Vietnam and other countries now in the custom of addressing is, that you use the first name. So, in the case of our Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, we have the first name „Dung“. But do we really address him as Mr. Dung? Of course not. It is not so easy. Although Vietnamese use the first names, they also differentiate between people of higher society and everyday people. And how can ...

After the existence of the high speed hydrofoil, scooting from the Saigon River to Vung Tau make the trip so much easier. No traffic congestion, no cars and it’s all about relaxing on the deck while departing to the southern coast of Vietnam. Continuing from my article about Vung Tau – Saigonese Weekend Escape, we are looking more forward for a more spiritual journey to Vung Tau, Long Hai and Con Dao Island. Take a local tour to Long Hai town which is located 30 kilometres from Vung Tau city. You may visit places of interest such as Bach Van Temple, Hon Mot Pagoda, Minh Dam Temple and Co Temple. Taking a trip to Long Son Island, hiking to Nua Mountain and visit a 1900s Long Son Great House and you can worship Ong Tran, the creator of a unique religion which required the men to keep a bun-hairstyle on their head and wearing black clothes. You also can take a tour to a local craft village at Hoa Long Village. The product which is produced here is ruou, a kind of rice liquor. There are also local people producing home-made rice paper and rice flour as well. From here, you may move forward to Dat Do town and visit Vo Thi Sau’s house.
